Fired in a renowned Shiwan kiln founded by Master Zhanquan He (b. 1963), a celebrated Cantonese pottery artist, collector, and successor of Shiwan kilns.
This charming yellow-glazed auspicious pendant represents Chiwen (蚩吻), one of the Nine Sons of the Dragon. With the head of a dragon and the tail of a fish, Chiwen is often depicted as a sea creature, also known as the ‘Aoyu’ (鳌鱼). This mythical figure is commonly found adorning the ridges of traditional Chinese architecture, where it serves a protective function.
Chiwen is believed to have the power to ward off evil spirits and protect the home, making it an enduring symbol of safety and prosperity. Its dragon head symbolizes strength, while the fish tail signifies fluidity and adaptability, embodying harmony between force and flexibility. The pendant's radiant yellow glaze further emphasises its auspicious nature, bringing warmth and positive energy to any space.
As both a decorative and symbolic object, this Chiwen pendant not only serves as a beautiful piece of craftsmanship but also offers the timeless blessings of protection and good fortune."
